Memorial Cycle Challenge
Berkhamsted resident Kath Jones is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for The Horse Trust, in memory of her 21-year-old daughter Alexandra Jones, who died in a car crash in March 2009.Kath, along with her friend Sally Bright, also from Berkhamsted, is leaving on Thursday 22nd October to take on a 500km cycle challenge in South-east Asia. The friends are raising money for the horses and ponies rescued from Spindles Farm, which are currently being looked after by The Horse Trust at its Home of Rest for Horses in Speen, Buckinghamshire.
Kath said Ali - as she was known by friends and family - was an animal lover and a keen horse rider. Ali had never visited The Horse Trust, but horse riding friends of hers recommended the charity to Kath.
"Ali loved horses," said Kath. "People who used to ride with her told me about The Horse Trust. I've been there three or four times and it's so peaceful and caring. I also like that it's somewhere that people can enjoy even if they aren't into horse riding."
The 11 day cycle challenge runs from Saigon in Vietnam to the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia. "We picked this challenge as it's somewhere neither of us have been to and we wanted to see places on the way," said Kath.
Kath and Sally, who are both in their 50s, have been training for the cycle ride since March.
"We've been doing lots of cycling. I can tell you about every hill around here," said Kath. "It has been very good for my mind as well as my body."
Ali, who was one of four siblings, attended Egerton Rothesay School and Tring School. She graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in Autumn 2008. At the time of the accident she was working at Hemel Hempstead Sportspace as a life guard and recreation assistant to raise money to go travelling.
