The record numbers of visitors coming to see the elderly horses, ponies and donkeys at The Home of Rest for Horses' Westcroft Stables in Lacey Green are in danger of turning the animals orange!
"They come armed with carrots and eager to feed the horses but the volume of carrots and the generosity of the visitors is unbalancing the animals’ feeding regime," explains marketing manager Susan Lewis.
"Now we are asking them to deposit all the carrots in a specially marked feed bin, from where they will be distributed among all the horses at feeding time even those which don’t come into the yard. This will ensure that each horse has a balanced diet and maintains good health," she said.
Rather than buying a bag of carrots from the supermarket, the Home would prefer if visitors made the same cash donation during their visit.
"This will help contribute towards the hard feed which is given to each of our horses daily," Mrs Lewis added. "A small donation will go a long way. A bag of feed costs just over £6 and will feed one horse for two weeks, so money in the box rather than the supermarkets cash-till makes a lot more sense."
