Life Begins at 40 for Little and Large

Life Begins at 40 for Little and Large The Horse Trust is celebrating a special birthday for two of its long-term residents. Forty is a remarkable age for any horse and the charity is proud to have two elderly equines, both of which have reached this old age.

Big John, more affectionately known as BJ, is a 16hh gelding. Rescued by his owner he went on to enjoy eight happy years with him before retiring to the stables at the age of 27.

Lady, one of the smallest residents is a 9.3 hh roan mare who came to the sanctuary in 1999. Little is known of her background but she makes friends easily and enjoys playing with her red "treat" ball.

The Trust has decided to mark these milestone birthdays with their favourite treats: a juicy turnip for BJ and extra special treats for Lady in her favourite red ball.

Head Groom, Charlotte Pardon said: "BJ is amazing! You would never believe his age - he acts more like a four year old. He is very cheeky and often plays tag with the grooms when they are trying to catch him in the field. He is always first at the gate when we move the horses and as soon as the gate is opened he charges through and bucks like a youngster."

"Lady's name is perfect for her,” she added. "She is growing old very gracefully and her manners are impeccable.  Her days are spent grazing quietly in the fields with her smaller friends."

The Horse Trust's Home of Rest for Horses has more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys, most of which are well into their 20s and many in their 30s.

"We must be doing something right," says Stable Manager Shirley Abbott. "Our herd of aged horses, ponies and donkeys is a reflection of the high standard of care our staff give in abundance.
