The Horse Trust Erects Mural Created by Local School Pupils

Horse Trust Mural

Horse Mural Visitors to The Horse Trust's Home of Rest for Horses in Speen, Buckinghamshire will now be greeted by the sight of an eye-catching mural on the wall of the demonstration area.

The mural has been created by 39 pupils from Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

The mural has taken around five months to put together, with most of the work done by year 8 pupils (aged 12 to 13 years old). A few year 10 pupils (aged 14 to 15 years old) helped the younger pupils with the artwork, as did Pat White, the Head of Art at Haberdashers.

"Most of the girls love horses and so were eager to produce art-work based on them," says Pat.

Pat came up with the concept for the mural, which depicts the four seasons at The Horse Trust.

"I have visited The Horse Trust a number of times and it looks so different in each season," said Pat. "As the mural was to go on four walls, it made sense to depict the different seasons. The style of the painting is loosely based on the work of the German Expressionist Franz Marc."

Pat visited The Horse Trust last week to help put the mural in place and carry out finishing touches on the work.

"I think the girls have done a wonderful job on the mural," said Pat. "It has been good for them to work on such a big project. Some of the girls were initially a bit intimidated by the size of the mural, but once they got started it was fine."

The pupils have been unable to see the finished mural in place as they are currently on summer holiday, but Pat hopes to organise a trip to The Horse Trust when the school term starts again in September.

"The mural looks wonderful and will certainly brighten up the demonstration area on gloomy days," said Susan Lewis, The Horse Trust’s Marketing Manager. "We would like to thank all the students from Haberdashers who devoted so much time to painting this mural."

The Horse Trust's Home of Rest for Horses is open to the public every day from 2pm until 4pm.
