Pony Club at The Horse Trust

Rebecca Evans with the Pony Club at The Horse Trust Rebecca Evans, The Horse Trust's Equine Welfare Manager, last week gave a talk to members of the Old Berkeley Hunt South branch of the Pony Club at The Home of Rest for Horses in Speen, Buckinghamshire.

Rebecca spoke to the 27 members of the Pony Club, which covers a wide area of Buckinghamshire1, about responsible horse ownership and horse health, as well as the work of The Horse Trust.

Mrs Maxine Edmond, District Commissioner of the Pony Club Branch, said the members - aged 6 to 20 years - learnt a lot and can put their knowledge towards the Pony Club tests, which recognise their ability to look after and ride a pony.

"Many of the children are working towards their C and C+ tests [at the Pony Club] and the talk was very educational," said Maxine. "I was encouraged by how much the children knew about diseases and health conditions which can affect horses. It's so important to reinforce being a responsible horse owner and Rebecca's talk did this very well."

The Pony Club members were given a tour of The Home of Rest and had the opportunity to meet many of the horses living there. Rebecca also did a quiz for the children, asking questions on the symptoms of horse illnesses such as colic and laminitis and about famous horses and their riders.

"The children were very keen to learn more about horse care and I was impressed with their knowledge on the subject," said Rebecca. "The children seemed to really enjoy their day out and were particularly smitten with Lola, a donkey who was rescued from Spindles Farm last year."
