Police Donation

Shirley Abbott, John Thurston and Holly Metcalf with Iceni and Dexter at The Horse Trust Thames Valley Police has donated £400 to The Horse Trust in recognition of the work the charity does with retired horses.

Sergeant John Thurston and PC Holly Metcalf, from the Thames Valley Police Mounted Section, presented a cheque to Paul Jepson, the Chief Executive and Veterinary Director of The Horse Trust.

Thames Valley Police has a budget of funds which come from the sale of unclaimed crime property. The Police Property Act has conditions that this money can only be used to support charity organisations and the £400 has been taken from this fund.

Sgt John Thurston, from the Thames Valley Police Mounted Section, said: "It is very comforting indeed to know there is such a wonderful place for our retired police horses to spend the rest of their days. The Horse Trust is a marvellous charity, with people who dedicate their lives to looking after the retirement needs of all horses, donkeys and ponies."

Ex Thames Valley Police horses Dexter and Iceni are both enjoying their peaceful retirement at the Home of Rest for Horses.  Dexter arrived in 2006 and Iceni in 2008 and they are happy, relaxing in their field together.

Paul Jepson, Chief Executive of The Horse Trust, said: "We would like to thank the Thames Valley Police for its donation to The Horse Trust. The money they have raised will make a difference to the welfare of horses across the UK."

Notes:

The Thames Valley Police Mounted Section is based in Milton Keynes and has eight horses which are ridden by a sergeant and nine PCs. They provide:

  • A mounted public order response across the Force, as well as in other force areas.
  • Support to neighbourhoods with targeted high visibility patrols.
  • A response to rural and urban searches initiated by search coordinators.
  • Mounted escort protection at military and royal events.
