Police Horse Retires
16-year-old Sherwin, a 17hh grey gelding, was involved in high-profile police work such as crowd control during the Liverpool FC parade after its Champions League victory in 2005 and protecting the winning horse of the Grand National 2005. He even played a part in the rescue of an 11-year-old boy who was choking to death.
Sherwin, who is also known by his force name Musketeer, is retiring as he can no longer be ridden due to Osteoarthritis.
PC Ian Carmichael, a mounted officer for the Merseyside Police who rode Sherwin for two years, said he is delighted that Sherwin will be able to spend the remaining years of his life in such a peaceful location, with access to 200 acres of paddocks.
"I brought Sherwin to The Horse Trust and when I led him out of the horse box he was very keen to get to his new stable. I'm sure he is going to be very happy there and will take full advantage of all that green ground to run around and roll in," says Carmichael.
Sherwin was popular with all the Mounted Branch and will be sorely missed, according to Lindsay Gaven, the stable manager for Merseyside Police. "There were lots of tears when he left. We will definitely go to visit him at The Horse Trust," says Gaven.
Sherwin will join horses from 3 other police forces at the Home of Rest, including horses from the Thames Valley and Greater Manchester Police.
Highlights of Sherwin's career include escorting the Liverpool FC team on their victory parade through the streets of Liverpool after winning the Champions League in 2005. He was also one of four horses that led Hedgehunter, the winner of the Grand National 2005, from the course to the winner's enclosure in a protective formation.
Sherwin was also involved in the rescue of an 11-year-old boy, Anthony Bridge, who was choking to death.
"I was riding Sherwin along a dual carriageway in Allerton when a vehicle stopped with a woman screaming for help. Sherwin stood there patiently on a very busy road while I gave the boy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation," says Carmichael.
During his 12 years service, Sherwin was involved in all operational police duties such as crowd control for Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere Rovers football matches and patrolling the Liverpool city centre in the evenings.
"People loved him - they would come up and try to feed him doner kebabs," says stable manager Gaven.
