Waitrose Helps Out
The money from Waitrose's Community Matters programme(1) will be put towards the care of the horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from Spindles Farm, which are currently being looked after by The Horse Trust."We are thrilled by this donation and would like to thank Waitrose and all the customers who voted for us," said Susan. "We hope that some of the customers who voted for us will come by to visit sometime so they can meet the horses, ponies and donkeys they have helped."
The Horse Trust is currently looking after 11 horses, ponies and donkeys that were rescued from Spindles Farm in January 2008. In May 2010, the Gray family lost their appeal against the RSPCA, which means that the charity can now rehome some of the horses and ponies rescued from Spindles Farm.
Due to their age and long-term health problems, some of the older animals from Spindles Farm will be given lifetime sanctuary at the charity's Home of Rest for Horses, such as jenny donkey Gladys, who was unable to stand unaided for 10 days after she arrived from Spindles Farm, and Angel, a mare with eyesight problems.
It will cost the charity £3,000 per year to continue to look after each of the Spindles Farm horses. To donate to the charity please visit the donations page. We coundn't do this without all the fantastic support we receive.
(1) Waitrose's Community Matters initiative has donated over £3 million to a wide range of charities and community groups since it's launch in 2008. The scheme gives each branch £1,000 to share out between three local good causes each month – such as welfare organisations, community groups, schools or local divisions of national charities. Customers vote for their preferred cause using a green token each time they shop and the money each cause is given is directly proportional to the tokens they receive.
