Equine veterinary practice supports The Home of Rest for Horses colic appeal
Deben Valley Equine Veterinary Clinic based in Framsden, Suffolk has hosted a client education colic evening for horse owners, event riders and dressage trainers. The event raised nearly £500 towards The Home of Rest for Horses' Echo Memorial Appeal.
This Appeal is an open-ended fund-raising project to speed the work to find the cure for colic and was named after Echo, the Metropolitan Police horse badly injured in the Hyde Park Bomb attack of 1982. Echo, who lived at The Home for 20 years, was so
traumatised by the tragedy he was unable to return to work and frequently suffered from bouts of colic, eventually losing his life to this distressing condition.
Professor Tim Greet, guest speaker from Rossdale & Partners Practice, Newmarket, emphasised the importance of prompt veterinary referral for the survival of a horse suffering from colic and that all colic cases must be viewed as emergencies.
Veterinary Surgeon Helen Whitbread from Deben Valley said: "Our equine clients were impressed to know just how much a vet can do if given the chance early on in the diagnosis of colic." She added: "They were also surprised to learn what a massive team it
takes to look after a horse in the post-operative period after colic surgery."
By supporting The Echo Memorial Appeal more money can be devoted to research the causes, management and treatment of colic.
