Newbould, Sheffield, vet Michael Hewetson has said farewell to his adopted home in favour of a sunny future in Riyadh, where he now works for a
Saudi Arabian Prince and cares for more than 200 thoroughbred racing horses.
The appointment comes close on the heels of his completion of a post-graduate Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons course in equine internal
medicine, funded by The Home of Rest for Horses.
South-African-born Michael's clinical scholarship was undertaken at the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare, University of Glasgow. This
purpose-built equine veterinary centre provides a 24-hour referral service for veterinary practitioners throughout Scotland and the North of
England and cares for the animals of Strathclyde Mounted Police, Glasgow Group of the Riding for the Disabled and Glasgow District Council.
As a clinical scholar, Michael diagnosed and treated many different ailments in a hugely variable caseload. On one notable occasion a stoical
West Highland trek pony was presented with a 30cm piece of gorse bush in his lung. The animal had endured the foreign body for more than 18
months before its successful, surgical removal.
Having passed his RCVS certificate examination in equine internal medicine, Michael helped to supervise final-year veterinary students as they
rotated through the equine clinic. His enthusiasm for teaching did not go unnoticed and he was named best clinical scholar in 2002.
"The skills I acquired during my clinical scholarship contributed hugely to my decision to become an equine veterinary specialist," he said.
"I am eternally grateful to The Home of Rest for Horses for allowing me the opportunity to improve my knowledge of equine welfare".
